We have proudly supported and assisted the Southern California Special Olympics for many years, demonstrating our dedicated commitment to this inspiring organization and its remarkable athletes. Over time, our involvement has expanded to encompass a variety of essential roles, with a primary focus on ensuring effective communication throughout the entire event. Given that the event attracts over 5,000 participants, volunteers, spectators, and staff from diverse locations, maintaining clear, reliable, and timely communication presents a significant challenge—but it is absolutely crucial to the event’s success. Whether coordinating transportation, managing supplies, enforcing safety protocols, or simply keeping everyone informed, our team plays a vital role in ensuring everything operates smoothly from start to finish. Typically, our responsibilities include managing and disseminating critical messages related to supplies—such as food, medical equipment, and athletic gear—to the appropriate teams and locations. We also work closely with volunteers and staff to streamline organizational flow, ensuring communication channels remain open and effective amidst the bustling atmosphere of the festivities. Beyond logistical support, we are always prepared to respond swiftly to emergencies, whether they involve medical concerns, weather issues, or unforeseen incidents. Our ability to rapidly relay essential information is often a decisive factor in safeguarding the health and well-being of all involved. In addition to our operational support during the event, I have personally utilized the Southern California Special Olympics as an invaluable training platform for radio operators over the years. It offers an excellent real-world environment that is both challenging and rewarding. Training radio operators in such a dynamic, large-scale setting helps develop vital skills in quick decision-making, effective communication, and problem-solving under pressure. This opportunity allows aspiring communication professionals to refine their abilities in a high-stakes environment while making meaningful contributions to an organization that champions inclusivity, athletic achievement, and community spirit. I first became involved in the 1990s when Henry (WA6RJA) was recruiting volunteers, so I decided to join. We would arrive early, and since I was new, I was assigned to a less active area. One morning, feeling a bit drowsy, I was leaning against a post when someone tapped me on the shoulder from behind. Startled, I turned around to see an athlete with a broad, radiant smile. She had just won a gold medal and was eager to share her excitement with everyone, whether they knew her or not. That moment truly captivated me, and I’ve been hooked ever since. While I often play a supporting role rather than being at the center of attention, I find great satisfaction in being part of the team that helps make these events memorable for the athletes.

The scheduled event will occur from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on November 14 and 15, 2026. For amateur radio operators, the designated frequency is 146.235 MHz with a +100 CTCSS tone. The repeater will be operational just before the event begins—feel free to test it if you’re within range. Non-ham attendees can use our available LTR radios. Lunch will be provided to all participants. For those unfamiliar with radio operation, we will offer a beginner’s training session.
